Recent statistics conclusively show that increased public pressure against drinking and driving, as well as tougher enforcement of drunk-driving laws, are paying off. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the proportion of drivers in fatal crashes who were drunk decreased by 20 percent between 1982 and 1991. (The NHTSA began keeping these statistics in 1982 and 1991 is the last year for which statistics were available.) In 1991, for the first time, the number of people killed in alcohol-related crashes dipped below 20,000 to account for less than 50 percent of those killed in auto accidents. By comparison, in 1982, 57 percent of all highway fatalities involved alcohol-related crashes. Still, these are numbers that must be improved upon. |
