THE ANXIETY OF CHILDREN
OF DIVORCE

Eye Catching Title
Children of divorced parents are likely to inherit a legacy of relationship anxiety. So say Michigan sociologists who surveyed more than 13,000 adults who had experienced the divorce of their parents, or who had lost a parent through death, or who had never lived with their biological fathers. While men and women whose parents had divorced when they were growing up are as likely to have happy marriages as people from intact families, these adult offspring of divorce are 70% more likely to feel anxious about the state of their marriages (even when happily married) than those who come from intact families. Because they tend not to know how to resolve the inevitable conflicts of married life, they constantly perceive trouble in their marriages. They share this anxiety with those who never grew up with their biological fathers.

Fathers are sometimes overlooked in the difficult times during a divorce. Many of these men often come from divorced families themselves. FOR MEN ONLY is a special support group dedicated to helping men talk about their problems. We treat both individuals and groups on the subjects of fatherhood, divorce, separation, relationship problems, stress, self-esteem, and alcohol and drug abuse. Share your feelings with other men going through the same thing. We're located at 250 Union Street. Please call 279-0900 for an appointment.

P.S. The survey mentioned above points out that those who lost a parent through death did not feel any more marital anxiety that those who grew up with families intact.
