Because the use of lasers is so closely associated with the ophthalmologist, patients tend to assume that the new light technology can be used to remedy any condition. However, this is not the case with cataracts. It is not true that the laser can be used to "zap" this clouding of the eye's lens. The laser is successful in treating a post-cataract condition. In those cases where the lens capsule is left in place after the cataract is removed, the capsule itself may cloud over. If so, the YAG laser may be used to create a tiny hole at the center of the cloudy capsule. This non-invasive procedure allows the eye to focus light properly, thus restoring vision. This procedure should not be confused with actual cataract surgery, which involves lens removal.

The surgical laser commonly is used for treatment of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and to "weld" detached retinas, although it's not appropriate for cataract surgery.
