The bracketed appliances (commonly known as "braces") used by orthodontists afford unsurpassed precision when exerting pressure on teeth and bone. They commonly consist of bands placed on the anchor teeth at each end of the appliance, brackets bonded to tooth surfaces, an archwire that passes across the brackets from one banded anchor to the other, and ligatures (wires) that hold the archwire firmly against the brackets. For the most part, the pressure necessary to move teeth comes from the archwire. The precise placement of each bracket on individual teeth assures that the pressure exerted by the archwire will be applied in the exact direction required. If additional pressure is needed, it may come from such auxiliary components as elastics and/or headgear.
