Asthma is a disease that affects the airways, lungs, and muscles used to move air in and out of the body. Allergic asthma is a type of asthma that is triggered by allergens in the air such as dust mites, mold, and pet dander. Allergic asthma is the most common type of asthma. When allergic asthma is triggered, a series of events occurs in the body that may be referred to as an allergic reaction. A small molecule is produced called Immunoglobulin E that causes the airway passages of the lungs to become inflamed and swollen, resulting in coughing and wheezing.
