THE WISDOM OF EXTRACTION

Eye Catching Title
When hearing about impacted, abscessed or painful wisdom teeth, many people wish to have them extracted before they "act up." However, they should never be extracted without a specific reason. Wisdom teeth actually are the permanent third molars. Because they are located so far back in the jaw, they may be more difficult to clean. As a result they tend to decay more easily. If they are badly formed, they also may be more prone to disease. People with small jaws may suffer from impacted wisdom teeth. Those with large jaws and smaller teeth have more room for them to erupt. Because they are part of the complete and permanent set of 32 teeth, wisdom teeth should not be routinely extracted.
Editorial Content

Wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of 17 and 21. Generally they don't have to be removed, but when they don't break through the gum, an impaction can result. Your dentist will tell you if your teenager's teeth should come out. Regular visits to your dentist can save problems from developing or from becoming too advanced for simple treatment. Richard Layton, D.D.S., and staff will be glad to help you and your family. We're easy to find in the Manomet Plaza on Point Road in Manomet, or phone 224-4041 for an appointment.

P.S. Wisdom teeth are so-called because they erupt around the age of adulthood (18-21) and wisdom.
