Patients with type 1 diabetes should include a dermatologist on the list of doctors that they regularly visit. The reason is that about two-thirds of patients with type 1 diabetes may have skin disorders, some of which can develop early in the course of the disease. While diabetes is known to be associated with a number of skin disorders, skin problems usually develop after the onset of diabetes. However, a skin problem may precede a diagnosis of diabetes or even be the first sign of the disease. For this reason alone, vigilance is necessary. Among diabetics, dry patches of scaly skin (ichthyosis), abnormal growth of blood vessels causing red discoloration (rubeosis), and fungal infection are relatively common. |
